...Don stood in the stark white room listening to the thrum thrum thrum of the MRI machine...
He was so tired…
The pit that had become a permanent fixture in his stomach the last three years deepened…
They had fought so hard time and time again to gain the tiniest bit of ground only to be devastated by another set back and another…
He watched as an image of his son’s brain appeared on the screen before him…
Each pass of the MRI added another layer to the image and another level to his apprehension...
It didn’t take long for him to realize that this was it…
His beautiful son, just 13 years old, was going to pass away…
He stared in horror as the image slowly rendered to show a white mass in Matthew’s brain the size of a lemon…
The fourth metastases of a very aggressive cancer…
He turned away from the screen, the desperation overwhelming him…
“What am I going to do?” he thought...
“No one knows but me…
I have to tell his mother about this…
I have to tell Matt about this…
And I can’t accept it myself… what am I going to do???”
Don walked slowly through the halls of the hospital dreading the conversation he was about to have…
When he and Matt got back to their room Matt looked at Don and said “So Dad, am I going to be OK?”
Don looked at him, then at the floor, then from side to side…
“I don’t know son...
This is serious...
It’s the most serious thing we’ve faced yet...”
“Dad...
If I die...
Are you going to kill yourself?”
Don starred...
“NO!
No Way!
Listen Matt...
I know that everything on this planet has a purpose….
If you look at a tree...
Sure it is beautiful...
but it also has a purpose...
It filters the air...
cools it...
gives us shade, fruit, wood...
All kinds of things...
It’s beautiful and amazing...
If something as simple as a tree serves such a great purpose imagine something even more amazing...
like YOU…
I know you have a purpose Matt...
I just don’t know if your purpose is here….
I think we will meet again someday…
And you will know how I lived my life…
I swear to you on this day...
That I will honor you with how I live my life…
I will give the world the most honorable man I can be…
And I will try to give the world the best version of YOU that I can give them…
If they don’t get the chance to know you…”
That conversation cemented in Don’s mind the path he needed to follow...
And hearing about it cemented my path for me as well…

Four months after that horrible night in the hospital Matt passed away…
I was there a few hours before he died…
Don is my business partner and more importantly my good friend…
I was there with him and for him through the entire three years of horror…
Through the surges of hope...
And the desperation of another round of bad news…

Through it all the we both became convinced that Matt got sick due in large part to the toxicity of our food and water supply…
Even our “healthy” food seems to be a toxic soup of chemicals…
Pesticides...
Herbicides...
Hormones...
And foreign genes...
Crops are genetically modified so as to not be affected by herbicides…
Unprecedented levels of those same herbicides end up
in our food…

Nitrates from chemical fertilizers wash into our water supply…
Growth Hormones are injected into the livestock we eat…
Antibiotics pervade our food supply...
All of these things continue to tax our system until eventually...
It just breaks down…
In Matthew’s case that break down cost him his life…

We decided when Matthew died that we would dedicate ourselves to making the world a healthier place…
In any way that we could…
Through education…
By supporting organizations with the same goal…
By giving of our time to support those in the same battle Matthew and his family fought...
And most importantly by being part of the solution to the problem...
We want as many people as possible to avoid the horror that Don and his family went through…

Terra Fresh is a company formed by a group of people that is dedicated to making the world a healthier place…
And the people who live in it healthier people...
Everything we do has that goal as the purpose behind it...
It just so happens that we have developed a way to make that happen…

We have been in the trenches for years (and still are) trying to change deeply ingrained agricultural practices...:
-Using only NPK (chemically derived at that) ignoring the rest of the minerals that provide health to the plants…
And nutritional value to the produce being grown...
-Using chemical fumigants to kill soil pathogens…,
And wiping out beneficial bacteria in the process...
And it is LETHAL stuff. You’re not even supposed to go into the field for days afterward...
-Using gallons of herbicides to kill the weeds around Genetically Modified Crops..
-Tilling the soil year after year as literally tons of topsoil blows away..
-Dousing struggling, nutrient and mineral deficient crops with pesticides…
Because they are too weak to fight off insects themselves...
As evidenced by our story in my last two emails all of these practices take a real toll on people’s health...
And for some people the price can be extreme...
However…
Even with all of the mounting evidence that today’s growing practices are unsafe…
And unsustainable…
It is still an uphill battle to create change because these practices are so ingrained in our modern day agriculture...
So a few years back we thought to ourselves…
“Who are the people who are the most concerned with and the most passionate about the quality of their food?”
The obvious answer was YOU, the home vegetable gardener...
You are willing to step up and take responsibility for your own food and health...
You are willing to put in the time and effort to make sure what you are putting in your mouth is healthy and chemical free...
You love the process…
You love being outside…
You aren’t afraid of a little work…
You love watching your plants grow…
You treat them almost like children...
Doing everything in your power to make sure they have everything they need...
You take pride in showing off and sharing the fruits of your labor...
We decided that although we would continue to fight to change the industry…
We would spend more time and effort supporting those who were already seeking their own health…
And the health of the planet...
